The Length of Your Jackets

Jacket length has a major impact on the way that the proportions of a man’s body are displayed. Jackets that drape down the body make the torso appear large and the legs appear small, while jackets with a cropped length make the torso small and legs appear large.

Almost all short men wear the wrong jacket for their body type. In fact, the style of jacket that short men are commonly attracted to is the one which diminishes their height the most: trench coats.

After speaking with many short men about this subject, an interesting pattern arose. It appears that many men who are self-conscious about their height idealise strong, tall masculine figures, particularly in film and television. Oftentimes, they will unconsciously try to mimic their idols’ clothing in hopes of mimicking the confidence that comes with them.

However, these tall men wear clothes that normalise their proportions – that is, making their legs appear shorter and closer in ratio to the length of their torso. The result is a multitude of short men wearing jackets that actively work to make them look even shorter!

Jackets fall into three distinct categories: cropped length, standard length and knee length. In this sense, ‘length’ refers to the point where the body of the jacket sits against your legs, as follows:
